How to clean the air in your home for your child

Do you think that the air inside your home is the cleanest? The truth is, many things can alter the quality of indoor air such as upholstery, cabinetry, asbestos-containing insulation, household cleaning products, beauty and personal care products, excessive moisture, heating and cooling systems, and combustion appliances. It is crucial to know how to clean the air in your home for you and your family members.

  1. Control humidity

Excess moisture and dampness from high humidity levels can aggravate allergies and asthma, and lead to the growth of mold, mildew, and dust mites. A dehumidifier will effectively draw moisture out of the air, eliminating the pollutants.

  1. Ventilate your kitchen

If you have a gas stove, it will release nitrogen dioxide which can be harmful and cause lung diseases at certain levels. To keep nitrogen dioxide to a minimum, install an air vent in your kitchen.

  1. Remove dust

Airborne dust can be inhaled and cause health issues such as coughing and allergies. To remove dust from the floor and surfaces, use a good vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter. It will trap particles as tiny as 0.3 microns and will keep the particles from re-entering the air. To remove dust from the air, use an air purifier.

  1. Avoid products containing VOC

VOCs are commonly found in wood preservatives, aerosol sprays and household cleaners, and they can cause health problems. Here are a few ingredients to look out for:

  • Methylene chloride
  • Benzene
  • Perchloroethylene

If you need to use products containing VOCs, you should try the following:

  • Buy limited quantities
  • Limit exposure by using it when nobody is around
  • Throw away the containers safely after each use
  • Follow label instructions
  1. Clean your air-cleaning devices

Air-cleaning devices such as air purifiers can release back contaminants into the air when their filter is not maintained. Follow the instructions on how to properly clean the filters and replace them when needed.

  1. Avoid pesticides

Pesticides contain dangerous chemicals that can be harmful to children and sensitive adults. Instead of using pesticides to keep the cockroaches or ants away, you can try safer methods such as blocking possible entrances where pests can enter, keeping your food closed, emptying your garbage bin nightly, and cleaning your food debris.

  1. Clean after your pets

When they move around and scratch themselves, pets shed a significant amount of dander which can trigger allergies and asthma. It’s essential to vacuum the area where your pet spends most of its time. As much as possible, wash its bedding, toys, and brushes.

  1. Clean and tidy your house

Dust and other pollutants can quickly accumulate in an untidy room. Get rid of unwanted items, vacuum and mop regularly, and remove your shoes before entering your house.

Choo Choo Train pays attention to the quality of indoor air in all our centres using the methods above. We keep ourselves informed of the latest news update on children’s health. For this reason too, the use of talc powder is not allowed in our centre as it can cause respiratory problems in babies.
